आत्म-स्थिति
There are three words in Sanskrit that can be used to describe our environments as a whole:
Pari-Sthiti: External environment (Current circumstances)
Mano-Sthiti: Internal environment (Mind/Body)
Aatma-Sthiti: Inner condition or Core
The first two we are pretty familiar with: Something happens on the outside, and it affects us, our thoughts and our feelings. (It also affects the condition of our body, but for simplicity, we are clubbing them together.) The third one is the key here: Aatma-Sthiti is the your core, your essence.
Aatma-Sthiti can be influenced in two ways:
Either unconsciously: you keep doing something again and again and it affects your Mano-Sthiti and over time, without you even realizing it, it leaves a mark on your Atma-Sthiti.
You operate inside-out i.e. you create your reality based on your core or inner vision. The difference is that instead of subconsciously imprinting habits and thought patterns on yourself, you take charge and create the version of you that you want.
We are not just machines that can be programmed to function a certain way from the outside. We also have to power to create a version of ourselves from the inside out, and consequently influence our reality.
For example, if you believe that the people around you are being difficult, and you tend to get angry about it, over time, this will become your essential nature. The other way to go about this would be: You decide that your inner core will be Peace and let this influence your state of mind and body and actions. No matter how difficult people are around you, you will stay fixed in this vision. You will still take action, but instead of reacting automatically, you will pause, reconsider and respond with peace.
Download and use this template and fill it as per the sample given on page 1. Or refer to it and simply make three boxes on a piece of paper.
In the first box, make a list of any major occurrence that troubles you on a daily basis.
In the second one, fill up how this makes you feel.
For the third one, ask yourself: over time, if left unchecked how will this affect your essence?
Notice/draw the direction of arrows to show the influence:
External → Internal → Core
Write down how you want to operate in such circumstances instead. Again, notice/make arrows to remind yourself the direction of influence.
Core → Internal → External.
Such changes do not happen instantaneously. But they will happen if you stick to it and work on it consciously. Over time, you will alter your state of being, your actions, behaviors and your experience of reality if you function inside-out.
Keep at it, and be kind to yourself in the process. This is a major, profound step that you are taking towards mindfulness and well-being.
